A note from the heart
So you’ve made it through January with at least some of your New Year’s resolutions intact. You’ve been eating more salads and volunteering to take the dog out for a walk – because, hey, that counts as exercise, right? And then you realize that it’s February and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Oh no. The chocolates. The candies. The obligation to have a fancy dinner somewhere. Ugh. February is also heart health month, and there’s no better time to start thinking about how to reduce your risk for heart disease. And, yes, you can do this and celebrate Valentine’s Day all at the same time. Here’s your 3-step “challenge” for February:
- 1.) Know your numbers. This includes your blood pressure, good cholesterol, bad cholesterol, triglycerides, etc. If you don’t want to spend the money at the doctor’s office, then keep an eye out for community health fairs where these are often done at no charge such as at a church event, business expo or senior expo.
- 2.) Have a plan for Valentine’s Day both at home and at the office. Oh, those co-workers love you and want to give you boxes of chocolate and candy. Sweet. Pick out one dark chocolate and savor it. When no one is looking, throw out the rest of it or take it home and divide it equally among your teens, but only if they promise to clean their room! If you and your significant other always eat out, then research the menu ahead of time. Knowing the nutrition information can help you avoid some high fat and high calorie entrees – even when some of them are disguised as a salad!
- 3.) Consider celebrating Valentine’s Day at home by preparing your own heart-healthy meal to tie in Heart Health month. This could be a special date night at home with your significant other or something for you and the kids if you want.
